Pre-Med Q&ACategory: Scheduling and ClassesScience Classes/GPA
AvatarH asked 2 years ago

I was planning on taking MICRBIOL 415 (Virology), and I was wondering if microbiology courses count towards the science GPA for med schools.
Also, I’m currently a Sophomore (Junior standing, according to Atlas), but Atlas is saying that most students that take this class are Seniors. Would this class be too difficult as a Sophomore / should I take it in the future? (I completed the pre-req for this course and a lot – but not all – of the “MCAT content courses.”)

Hello!

Since you have already taken the advisory pre-req for the course (Bio 172) I wouldn’t worry about the class being too hard for you as a sophomore. The workload doesn’t seem super high and the average grade sits at an A-, which is pretty good.

MICRBIOL 415 is actually an elective for Microbiology majors. Students tend to take their major electives in junior/senior year, which is why the proportion of seniors in the class is higher.

Best of luck! Let us know if you have anymore questions.

Thanks for getting back to me!
I was wondering if microbiology courses also count as biology/science courses for medical school (in terms of GPA).
(Do all biology courses – those with the “BIOLOGY” course names – count towards the science GPA? No matter what the content is?)
Thank you again!

Hi there,

Yes, in general any biology course will count towards the science GPA. I would imagine Micrbiol 415 would definitely fall under this category. Here is a link to the AAMC’s guide to course classifications.
