Pre-Med Q&ACategory: MiscellaneousRetaking Chem 210
AvatarAnon asked 1 year ago

Hi,
I’m really not doing well in Chem 210 right now and am worried that I might fail the class. If I do well on the final I might be able to scrape by with a C/C- or C+ but unlikely. Would it be better to withdraw and have a W on my transcript and retake the class next semester, or go through with it and see if I pass. I’m wondering if having a W on my transcript is worse than having a C/C- or worse and then retaking it. Would it be better if I withdrew and did better in the class the second time or get a C-/fail and then improve my grade?
Thank you!

Personally, I think it would be better for you to withdraw and then do better the second time around. One W on your transcript will be easy to explain in an interview (you weren’t doing well in the class because of XYZ factors and wanted to have a fresh start to do well the second time around, and actually show that you did better). Having a C- or fail on your transcript stays there even when you retake the course and to be honest, I am not sure if you get full grade replacement for your GPA when you retake a course. From your question, it seems like you know it will be unlikely that you get a C (especially knowing 210 concepts heavily build on each other) it would be best to start fresh, take the W, and really commit to doing well next time.
Hopefully, this helps, I am sorry you are in this difficult situation. I can say with confidence that everyone goes through this, so don’t be too hard on yourself. Let us know if you want any tips on studying for Orgo or if you have any other questions.
