Hello! Thank you for offering this website to fellow pre-meds looking for answers. I have a couple myself, primarily a good course path and perhaps some opportunities to get involved and begin my path to pursue a surgical path. I’m currently a transfer student and this will be my first semester at UoM! I’ve always loved Biology so I presumed to satisfy the credit requirement for applying to medical school I would major in Biology. I’m open to any suggestions to help, or simply reassurance if I’m currently on a good path. Thank you!

Hi! Thanks for reaching out. There are many great course paths at Michigan, so I would recommend that you pursue a path that you are passionate about. Additionally, persistence is key. If you want to be a surgeon, you want to shadow as many surgeons as possible and this means you’ll have to cold email dozens of surgeons in order to do so. Additionally, we have an advisor who is a transfer student, Haniyeh Zamani, so I would recommend dropping into her office hours to talk to her about a course schedule. I’d like to add that we have a ton of great biology or biology-based majors at our university, so there is no need to stick to just biology (unless of course, that is what you are most interested in)! Some of the other ones you may consider include:
- Biology, Health, and Society
- Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology
- Microbiology
- Neuroscience
- Ecology and Evolutionary Biology
- Biomolecular Science
- Biopsychology, Cognition, and Neuroscience
As underclassman, many of our advisors (including me) have researched/compared each of these majors before making a decision so come on in to our peer advising hours to talk to us if you want some help making a decision!

Thank you so much for the advice! Could I have some contact information for the advising office, Pooja? I’ve tried looking at the Newman advising services to search for your name to set up an appointment but alas I had no results.

We are not affiliated with Newnan, so you won’t find our advising schedule there. Rather, it looks like you found our Advising tab at our website here! If you click on the date, you can even see who is advising and from when to when. If you are looking to speak with a certain adviser, feel free to reference those names and read our bio is the About Us tab.
