Pre-Med Q&ACategory: Scheduling and ClassesChem 230 vs. Biolchem 415
AvatarAna asked 1 year ago

Hi, I am taking Chem 215/216 now, and I was wondering which class, Chem 230 or Biolchem 415, would be better to take next semester regarding similar material content? I was looking at the pre-reqs, and Chem 230’s is chem 215/216, while Biolchem 415’s is one semester of orgo. I’ll take both classes sometime, it’s just a matter of which one I take first.

Hi, thanks for asking your question!

I want to start by saying that neither biochemistry nor physical chemistry uses organic chemistry completely – you might need material from orgo here and there, but they won’t build off of orgo like some other classes (but this is my experience after taking Chem 351 and Chem 260). Given this (and from others who took the class you mentioned), Chem 230 isn’t heavily based on organic chemistry material, so there’s no need to take it right after – you may take Biolchem 415 if you want.

I would suggest that you wait until the Course Guide opens for next semester and decide based on professors, your schedule, etc. until you make your final decision since either class is a good follow-up after orgo!

I hope this helps! If you have any more questions, feel free to stop by our advising hours from Sunday-Wednesdays at 6-10pm.
