Hi,
I just finished my first year, and I’m starting to look for research that I like and will be very interested in. Is it okay to ask doctors from the UM Hospital who do research to join their team? Is there a possibility they would accept someone who is still in undergrad? I’m trying to be very open with my options because I know everyone is having a hard time right now. I just thought I would ask because there are so many doctors at the hospital who are doing research. Or is it better to stick with professors?
Thanks!
Hi Reem,
I would recommend sticking to professors. As of now, the doctors are slammed at the hospital, and those conducting research are few and far between. There is a good chance that professors might have some work for you. A lot of research can be done remotely, especially if you are starting on a new project. You will have to read the relevant literature and you could help with data analysis and visualization which are valuable skills to develop for the MCAT and your future classes. This could be a good time to start a long term project with a lab. As of now, previously hired undergrads are allowed physically back into labs. Hopefully, this will be extend to newcomers shortly. I hope this helped. Let us know if you have any other questions.
